I Just Love Streaming-Better Than Most Garbage Which Is Offered Online Now

Today, I learned some interesting lessons. I really don't personally enjoy using or viewing most things online anymore-compared to even a few years ago. If things were normal (mainly economy speaking), I really don't think I would bother to say the least with the Internet or simply put, life online. I find it not only expensive to maintain (hardware speaking like those Broadband connections), but far more headachey than what was offered until advertised or subscription paid video/audio streaming came along. That is the only joy I have found online. Not static Websites, boring rambling E-soapboxes of fools, or hustlers masquerading as "friends" or whatever passes for relationships are called online now, or even shopping remotely. The computer used for basic streaming does not "talk" back, I get caught up with television shows, news, classic movies, and all those odd little video/audio features that would have been missed before streaming, when I want it, and go feeling somewhat refreshed, not annoyed or cheated.

I rather have human interaction like I did when I was younger. I have precious memories of friends and relations which passed on that I will never have created or developed interacting with a screen. I realize this especially today. The Internet is a connection, not a place to live one's short life on. Too bad the preceding Internet world-mostly before 1995 or so-is dead now and lost until the present mess is fixed.

....Telling me that he won't even touch the (sewing) machine unless I give him $48 for diagnosis. He tells me that I have the wrong presser foot, that an original foot would run hundreds and hundreds of dollars. He says something about the motor, and I ask him how much a new motor for my machine would run (I am SO not rich)
He won't tell me for less than $48, and won't let me get a word in edgewise.
He then grabs a yellowed christmas card and launches into a bizarre spiel about some guy that owns the MGM grand and will only come to him for machine repairs.
I remark on how nice that must be for him, scoop up my machine and leave.
Won't be returning...."

Ooookaaay, I am in the crossroads to determine whether or not if it is in my best interests to repair my 18 year White sewing machine or buy another new Kenmore basic one. The above review is from a sewing machine repair/sales shop I was considering. I deliberately omitted the business' name as to not unintentionally cause problems for the entity. This is the usual problem that I was running against whenever I decided to take the machine in for servicing or salvaging. I guess I will pass & toss. Then buy the new one.

Brompton Bashing (Literally)?

I thought that I should make a note of what happened today on the light rail train. I took my Brompton not bagged, & on board in the cabin as is my habit sometimes. I do bag it when I use buses or in very crowded situations. But on trains there are times I don't do this. And this time was one of them. I was on a side facing long multiple seat bench near one of the entrance/ext doors. A man decided to get off and reached underneath the bench facing me and pulled out his duffel bag and bumped into the bike. Not a problem until when he turned to step off he banged into the wheel. I have seen this behavior before on the train usually without my own bikes with other people doing the same type of thing to other's bikes. I don't think it is space problems as it is a hostility problem either conscious aware of this or not. So.... I think behavior like this (plus some other ones I see from time to time-at times directed to me, and other times not-has made me a turncoat. Back to driving alone cocooned in the safety of a metal shell to protect me from all that hostility.

Or if I just have to endure using public transit for now, bag the bike all the time and try to sit away from people.

I simply readopted my rather frugal upbringing which borders on conservatism-and lots of thinking and asking questions before plucking down a large investment of money or time in either selecting, using, or maintaining any given bike, not necessary the Hooligan. As for the lifespan of anything that crosses my path, I do try to get a good idea of it before I integrate it into my life. I know most things have planned or built in obsolescence in this society-i.e. this computer I an tying on right now 2-4 years only. I am also aware of it as this long term recession continues in my region and the more empty both large big box and little guy stores creating even longer lines of the under and unemployed does that to a person. The choice is strictly yours in whatever you do in your life. I would not want to take away freedom from anyone that can-and able to-exercise it still. I can honestly say for sure right now that the Hooligan is a perfect bike for the younger set-or with a younger view- with ample financial freedom and loves to do trick riding. I know young people around here would give their right arm for one. I was young like that once (although minus the trick riding). But growing up poor and falling out of the middle class and returning to the same muck seems to change me into what my family-of-origin tried to keep me from-depression era style frugality. So...that means conservatism in buying and using steel bikes only with a given track record for now (well, until the good times return, then we will see....).

I posted the above as an reply to a couple of retorts about my, well, criticisms of a new bike offered by a bike company that is just another aluminum frame junkie, Cannondale. Nice bike, but hardly worth the money. I look not only for quality, but something you won't get tired of in say 6 months or so. Some people still have money to burn and how they choose to do so is up to them. What happens if you lose your income or cannot rise to the level of education and other things that you are accustomed to? I thought most have reeducated themselves. I guess not.

One of the things I will always incorporate into my designs is affordable even to someone who does not have much money. And getting plenty of value in each of my offerings.

I have been sewing the Cordura 500 coated and regular Cordura 1000(back packing stuff). I think the most important thing is needle/thread selection. I use a Jeans needle size 100/16 with Gütermann Polyester Thread. I don't think there is a need for heavy duty thread with these weights of Cordura. And yes you should be fine with a home machine. I just got rid of a machine I have owned since I was a teenager and replaced it with a new Pfaff hawtness!!....A regular machine is fine. Ideally one that can do auto-bartacking. Use the fattest needle and poly thread that will fit your machine..... bought the cheapest sewing machine they had at Joann's Fabrics. I think it $110 or something. I knocked the timing out once using too heavy of a thread, but other than that it's held up fine. If I'm sewing through several layers of thicker fabrics(velcro+webbing+2 layers of cordura) for short stretches I'll 'walk' it through using the hand wheel, same for really tight corners where I would otherwise be really likely to bend a needle.

If you don't have any experience sewing, get something cheap off of craigslist. You're probably looking at a minimum of $45 for any professional sewing machine repair, so start cheap and toss it when/if it breaks.....As for the question concerning different types of nylon, 1050, 1000 500 are all denier ratings (that’s what the D stands for). It’s system that rates the tear strength and abrasion resistance of certain “grades” of nylons. The simplest way to explain it is that the lower the denier rating the less abrasion resistant the nylon fabric is. That’s not to say that 1000D is “better” than 500D. They are used for different applications. 1000D is far heavier and less flexible than 500D but 500D is far less abrasion and puncture resistant than 500D. This promotes their coexistence. If you need 500D, 1000D is over kill if you need 1000D, 500D isn’t enough. It’s a matter of personal preference and methodology of use.

I have a crack in my frame, what do I do to find out if it is covered under warranty?

The first step is to take your bike to your local dealer to be evaluated. They can then determine if it is a warranty issue or not. Many cracks in carbon frames are non-structural paint cracks. If it is a structural crack , they can start the process to have the frame returned to us to be repaired or replaced. If it is not warranty, they can let you know what options you have.

Yet, another soon-to-be former Raleigh owner suggested that ".....The Raleigh I'm selling originally shipped with the 451 mm 20" wheels. It's currently converted to standard BMX 20" (406 mm) and running a fixed gear. The cottered crank is being lame and I think will need to be replaced, which is really the crux of what stopped me in my tracks on this bike. Switching from 451 to 406 wheels makes for a bit of a bottom bracket drop. And with cheesy cottered cranks on there, you're stuck with huge platform (9/16ths) pedals; couple that with the fact that you're running fixed gear and you get the unintentional bunny hop on some corners, which is always a fun surprise.

I wanted to replace the cranks with some fancy short cranks, but to replace the cranks you need a regular/square spindle bottom bracket. The Raleigh 20 comes with a "special" (read: proprietary) bottom bracket shell, and of course the only sensible way to get a normal bottom bracket in there is to buy some fancy Phil Wood retaining rings. Phil is known for nice stuff, not bargain value prices. So that's where I stopped on this project....."

So to each his/her own I guess. Oh, by the way. A little research would show some nice alternatives to the pedal problem, namely the MKS Sylvan Road Pedals & Marathon Kevlar tires (my choice for my own Twenty). It seems to accept the oddball 9/16 size. And others seem to agree....

There are two common pedal threadings, 1/2" x 20 TPI and 9/16" x 20 TPI. The former is used mostly for bikes with one-piece (Ashtabula) cranks. There's a much greater variety of pedals available with the 9/16" threading, which is used on the original Twenty cranks.

I waited for a chance to fix mine up to ride able level and the wait seems to pay off even now.

At first I thought these were quick releases, but they are actually basically wing nuts. They allow easy seat and handlebar height adjustment......I decided to go to work on the Twenty today, it has a front brake now and a Dutch-style O-lock so it can be used(After my first post a user from http://raleightwenty.webs.com/ told me that the mount I recognised as an O-lock mount is also used to mount a pletscher rack). My first impression of the ride was that the bike deserves its cult status. It is very comfortable and for someone a bit shorter than me would provide a nice upright riding position (I have to have the seat too high for a perfectly straight back). The bike doesn’t have the overly twitch steering common to smaller wheeled bikes, making it very pleasant to cruise about on. The stock gearing is pretty high, with a 15 tooth sprocket on the hub making third gear pretty much redundant.

A little over 11 years ago, I rescued a little Bengal kitten tossed into the street who did not live up to the expectations of the breeder (no spots). I hand raised from around 2 1/2- 3 weeks old and kept him as I grew very fond and attached to him with his multiple spots that came out slowly. I regret to inform you all of his very quick passing from HCM or a kitty heart attack with no warning of any kind at 3 o'clock in the morning. Since I was a Bengal owner with no guidance of any kind from a breeder (obviously), I was not aware of this genetic problem in these cats. If you have such a cat-get it tested. Even so, there is no guarantee that this will do much in prevention.

If there is a serious deficiency with these bikes, it's in the braking department. Steel rims combined with long-reach side-pull brakes make for barely adequate stopping power at the best of times, and pretty well non-existent in the rain! One of the first things I did to this bike was to put on some alloy wheels. The front one came from a BMX bike, and is perhaps overkill with 36 spokes, but hey, the bike now stops! For the rear I was rather lazy, and instead of bulding up a whole new wheel with a 3-speed hub, I took the easy way out by buying a 20" alloy rim, and simply transferring everything over to it, old spokes, nipples and all! If things had not transferred well then I probably would have started from scratch, but the bike hadn't been used in the winter so things were not rusted solid. The new wheels do two things: they provide much better braking (though those brake arms are way too long), and they also lighten the bike a bit. For the best possible stopping power I fitted KoolStop "salmon" brake pads all 'round.

As Chombi said, PB Blaster only works within a range of seized nuts & bolts. However, it will be the ONLY thing that works at the most difficult end of that range. I've tried WD40, Liquid-Wrench and several other stuff on-hand at a shop to free up a seized seatpost for 2-hours. It was so stuck, I couldn't even twist it by holding the back & nose of the saddle. Then I borrowed some PB Blaster from an auto-shop down the street and sprayed it on the seatpost and set the bike aside at the back of the shop and left for lunch. When I came back, the seatpost had unstuck and slide down into the frame! So PB Blaster is the best stuff to free up corroded parts, better than WD40 or Liquid-Wrench. But there are cases where even it can't help. I save myself a lot of time by going straight for the PB Blaster first and have thrown away all the WD40 and Liquid Wrench laying around.

Any of us that live in the rust belt and have worked on a Jeep that's been around a few years knows the aggravation of trying to get loose a nut or bolt that has rust fused itself. In our experience the best penetrating fluid is PB Blaster.
This spray has been the most effective product we have used. Here is some tips on removing those stubborn bolts.
Excessive muscle will just break off a bolt and make things worse.
Apply plentiful amounts of PB, give it some time to soak in.
Gently rock the nut or bolt, this can help break the bond.
A torch will be useful if the PB alone will not work. BE CAREFUL! The PB may burn and so may many other things surrounding the nut/bolt. When using a torch try to heat either the nut or the bolt but not both. After heating immediately try to loosen it.

Removing Seized Nuts and Bolts
This article attempts to allow you to arm yourself with knowledge about removing stubborn fasteners. The items are listed from what we believe is a first to last resort. Happy wrenching, or in this case, hopeful wrenching.
Penetrating Fluid
This stuff is usually the best start on removing a stubborn nut or bolt. It is very simple to use. Spray it on, wait a while and try to break the problem loose. Usually gently rocking the nut or bolt is more effective than the strong arm approach. If a fastener is being a problem try a second application 24 hours later to see if it makes a difference. Our favorite kind on fluid isPB Blaster Penetrating Catalyst but there are several others...Liquid Wrench and WD40 to name a few.

These handy tools can cut a nut off from a bolt. A small tool is fitted around the nut and using a wrench a blade is forced into the side of the nut usually causing the nut to break. Sometimes it can even do so without destroying the bolt.

Extractors
A bolt or screw extractor can be useful for removing a broken bolt or a bolt with a destroyed head. Extractors are used by drilling a properly sized hole in the stuck bolt and inserting the extractor. The extractor is reverse threaded so by loosening the extractor the tighter it tries to threat into the stuck bolt. Be careful not to exert too much force on the extractor. A broken extractor is near impossible to drill out.

Heat - aka the "Gas Wrench"
Using heat usually comes as a last resort. Heating the bolt breaks the bond and usually allows for easy extraction. BE CAREFUL! Using a torch under or around your vehicle can be dangerous. Make sure you are aware of the surrounding area. An acetylene torch usually works the best. High heat that can quickly heat the stuck bolt will give the best results and will avoid heating the surrounding area.
Cutting
Occasionally a bolt just refuses to come out. If you are lucky you can cut off the bolt and let the other side fall out. It usually seems that this down and dirty method is inappropriate most of the time. Obviously you can't cut a bolt that threads into something that can't be removed, like a cross member bolt. Although on some occasions you can decide to cut off a bolt head to allow a piece to come apart and allow access to the shaft of the bolt. Usually in this situation a vice grip is clamped onto the bolt and heat may be applied.

Today I came across this bike from an estate sale. It has most of it's parts....although the folding mechanisms do appear to be fine and not missing, they are a bit rusted and frozen in place. I am going to clean up the bike as best as I can, then I will take it to a bike shop familiar with European bikes and see what they can successfully make it fold up again and in a ride able condition for now.

Hmmmm....interesting turn of events. I never cease to amaze at the unbelievable and unpredictable behavior of dye-in-the-wood fans of whatever junk or ideas floating out there. You talk anything"negative" about their choices and bamm! you get it! Well so much for "freedom of speech" and what not. I still think of most bikes just like my sewing machines-nice but still disposable Chinese imported products that may or may not last a long time. In other words a gamble every time you have to buy one. I don't like or dislike those bikes anymore-I just cannot afford any more costly mistakes. Like associate them with good quality repairable products from first world factories. After a year or 2 may not be possible to repair major proprietary parts like frame latches, yet quality ones you very easily can. I now buy for the long haul-i.e. either repairable or otherwise cheaply disposable and replaced. If I must for special activities or uses, I will continue to buy certain third world products as no real choice exists anymore. Even though it can no longer be repaired like sewing machines or now even most bikes. I have bought a Chinese make sewing machine recently. It works fine and after it's 3 month warranty, I hope it will continue to do so. The far east bikes are lumped there too. The Brompton & the house, no. They are in another class entirely.

I guess it is up to individuals not to take the Internet too seriously-and conduct your lives accordingly. Offline life existed long before and that is reality enough for me-and where I buy my products.

Later Edit: I guess it comes down to.....I am tired of products passing for something they are not. Most products come from China, India, and other countries I cannot pronounce anymore. The products may or may not have some sort of "Quality Control" practiced at their factories, have proper Customer Service beyond exchange at the retail level or a 800 number staffed by anyone, anywhere in the world. I cannot afford to go around blindly supporting such practices. I am now consciously buying only products made in factories staffed by Americans, Canadians, UK, Europeans, and the like and not third worlders anymore if I possibly can. I want to do actual tangible things & activities, not mince through malls buying loads of shoddy overpriced at the middleman, products that you get tired of very quickly and discard. And if I must, I want to know the difference when I am forced to buy these products because of my personal finances or lack of alternatives.

Please Note This About Commercial Patterns For The Home Sewer:

This is a true story
I worked for a company that produced thirty million dollars worth of sportcoats a year. For the sake of argument, let’s assume they knew practiced and professional ways to sew sportcoats.

One day, management (in a fit of boredom) decided to develop a new fitting style, and sent someone to the fabric store to buy a “commercial” pattern to try it out.

Mass confusion raged. It took four people, two days just to cut it out. We’d never seen anything like it. The pattern pieces looked ‘weird’ and some of them were even missing. The production manager became angry because the entire department was working on one ‘commercial’ pattern. She said, “If home sewers can figure it out, it should be a breeze for you guys.”

On the third day, we gave it to the sample maker who couldn’t figure out how to sew it. In fact, she literally threw it at me twice. I kept pleading, “But I didn’t make the pattern.” She said, “You’re the pattern maker. You figure it out. I’m not sewing it!” By the way, this lady sewed three lined sportcoats every day, for thirty years. I had never seen her frown, much less get mad and throw things at anyone.

Then we sneaked over to the sewing line and begged gratuitously. Having the sewing line put it together took a combination of bribery, thinly veiled threats and seriously depleted our favor bank. Finally two weeks later, it was finished.

It looked horrible; but gluttons for punishment that we were, we weren’t willing to give up. We fit it in the style meeting. Management was appalled; they kept saying, “How do home sewers put up with this?”

Normally a test sample like this is sold in the company’s outlet store, but they were afraid a consumer would try it on and think that all of the company’s products fit and looked like that one. So they literally threw it away (a nice silk too). No one stole it from the trash since we were very disgusted by then and very happy to see the last of it (but I did save the pattern to amuse myself).

For the sake of argument, let’s assume two things:

This company is professional.
You aren’t.

Conclusion: If professionals can’t use store bought patterns in production, why would you?

Other new companies don’t use store bought patterns and the designer will make their own. This could mean they’ve underestimated the technical skill and training needed to generate quality work. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the DE actually has any training; I’ve seen just as many non-sewing, untrained DEs make their patterns as I’ve seen design school graduates make theirs.

Many times, untrained DEs are better at the task because they assume they know nothing and re-invent the wheel. They’ll often study and practice at length and even attend classes or pay private tutors. Design school trained DEs often think they have the skills, because they took ‘production pattern making’ in college. Well, I took production pattern making too, but I was not prepared for the realities of the workplace.

Notes On Sewing Machines

Stitch functions sounds exciting, but in reality 99% of your sewing will be a simple straight stitch. Don't get sucked in to that detail. Same with automatic needle threading, etc.

What you do want:

--A motor with the power to drive the needle through 3-layers of upholstery fabric (think hems).

--Easy and quality buttonholes (this is a zig-zag stitch and the machine is programmed to make the buttonhole automatically for you)

--Speed control. You don't want a machine that sews too slow, or too fast, and you want to be able to control the speed easily with the pedal or with a manual throttle.

--Easy-to-change needles. And for the love of sewing, please be sure you're using the right size needle for the fabric you're using!! this will make a night/day difference in a succsessful project.

Skip JoAnne's and go to a local sewing machine shop. Get the best *used* machine you can afford. And play with several models using sample fabric. Take the machine through some of the basic steps you'd do at home.

I'm a seamstress/tailor in Minneapolis and I also teach private sewing lessons, and I get asked this question a lot!

I agree with kimg924 above. I would strongly recommend you do NOT get any of the above machines!!! In fact, stay as far away from newer model Singers as possible; they are utter junk. I grew up using a Kenmore from the 70's and have used current Kenmore models and feel that they continue to be quality machines, still made with metal bodies in most cases which is rare these day. They can really power through several layers of denim without breaking the needle. One of my students had the $89 Kenmore and it worked well for the mose part but the button hole attachment was F-ed up!

Currently I have a Necchi, model 3434D and I wouldn't give her up for the world. She is such a work horse! Made entirely of metal which gives it a good weight to prevent it from jiggling around as you sew at higher speeds. Look for a Necchi at a used sewing machine shop or from a dealer. Won't find them at JoAnns.

For a beginner I recommend going to a sewing machine/vac store and getting a nice refurbished used machine. Some of the best machines I've used were Vikings from the 1970's. Skip the 50 different seam options; you'll never use them. Get a machine with 5-10 stitches. Also, get a front-loading bobbin rather than top loading. Although it takes a bit to get the hang of loading it at first, when something gets tangled or jammed you have much more control and access to the mechanics. Look for a machine with traditional control nobs for stitch length and stitch width. Many newer machines try to combine functions like these in an effort to make things "easier" but you end up having much less control once you've learned the basics.

so sad to hear that the Bernina you purchased on ebay didn't work out for you. That is the risk with used machines. Thanks for sharing your lesson with everyone here. I'm glad that you're still for trying out old ones with the caveat of getting them tested quickly.

It is heartening to see so much good advice being offered here by experienced sewers. I have been through many different makes and ages of machines as a result of working at many different theatre and dance costume shops in my line of work, as well as from home experience, and I'd echo what many have said here: go for metal as opposed to plastic parts, which is why the older machines are often great, because newer, cheaper models incorporate much more plastic, which will warp, become brittle, and crack over time.

As for brands, I grew up with an old Singer in my mom's home and remained faithful to the brand when I bought my first machine of my own, but my training and professional work converted me into a Bernina devotee. The brand isn't as important as the machine's durability and functionality, but working Berninas are a safe bet if you can afford them. My students like them (we have 10 Bernina home sewing machines in my shop) because they are user-friendly and the symbols on the controls are rather intuitive once you learn the basics. And they can really take a beating from my students when they are just learning how to use the machines and don't yet understand that a big crunching noise means you should stop sewing and check on the poor machine.

Something else that may have been been briefly touched upon earlier: unless you're planning on doing some major machine embroidery or fancy stitches, don't go for the souped-up computerized machine with a computer screen built-in. Not only are they a hassle to learn, but if you have to get it repaired, it can cost a ridiculous amount of money if there is computer software involved in the problem. I recently did a summer gig at a theatre where the well-intentioned company founders bought two new machines of that nature. It was heart-breaking because it seemed like such a waste, but we didn't want to seem ingrateful or make them feel bad, so we sucked it up and used the wimpy computerized machines.

And yeah, I hate those computerized machines where the needle always stops out of the fabric rather than stopping wherever it was when I took my foot off the foot pedal, because usually it means that the machine will take an extra stitch after I have taken my foot off the pedal, which is really annoying if I'm trying to carefully pivot around the corner of a collar or pocket or the like.

Now you’re ready to buy. Personally, I think all you need in a sewing machine is a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, buttonhole and a free arm, but again, it’s an individual decision. Consumer Reportsjust did a report on sewing machines in its March 2009 issue. Here are three of their picks that I like:

Kenmore 15358 (sugg. retail $119.99). A mechanical model with a 1-step automatic buttonhole and several stretch stitches for sewing knits. I have a Kenmore machine and am very pleased with it; Kenmore machines are made by Janome, BTW.

Kenmore 16231 (sugg. retail $249.99) This one provides an opportunity to experience electronic functions while maintaining mechanical operation. Sorry to recommend another Kenmore here, but I’m partial to sewing machine manufacturers you hear fewer complaints about, like Kenmore, Janome and Bernina.

Brother Innov-is-40 Project Runway (sugg. retail $400) This model was one of Consumer Reports' favorites, saying it did a “very good job on satin, medium-weight wool, sheer and stretchy fabrics, and buttonholes.” I’ve owned Brothers in the past and have been satisfied with their performance.

5 Ways to Economize at Home During Economic Hard Times

The local newspaper last week reported a substantial increase in sales of sewing machines. The owner of the business attributed this to the current economic downturn and its effects on households struggling to meet mortgage and credit card repayments. She is not the only retailer noticing a change in consumer habits. Kitchen appliance outlets have seen an upsurge of interest in the old-fashioned pressure cooker and butchers are being asked more often for the cheap cuts of meat and large joints. These require longer cooking times but can be bulked up with root vegetables to provide more meals from one cooking session.

Anyone whose parents or grandparents lived through previous global Depressions of the 1930s or 1890s can tell you that wives and mothers hold the key to their family's survival. Here are 5 simple bits of wisdom handed down through the generations.

1. Manage the money you now have.

A 'no-brainer' is to pay off your debts in whatever amounts you can manage but on a regular basis. Along with that, you simply do not buy anything new that you can do without. The new mantra is 'need, not greed.' Form a regular habit of putting aside something 'For a Rainy Day.' It may be only a two dollar coin per day - saved from a canned soft drink you did not buy - but at the end of a month it is enough to pay for a visit to the specialist, if one of the family falls ill.

2. Don't pay for anything you can do or make yourself.

With the obvious exception of electrical or plumbing work that must be carried out by professionals, house maintenance is usually within the capacity of any fit person. Advice is often available from friends, family or neighbours. If you have an Internet connection, use it to find websites offering free How To articles and videos. With your computer and printer you can send lovingly homemade greetings cards for birthdays and Christmas.

3. Grow some of your food and cook it at home.

Until you start growing vegetables, you'll never know how much pleasure comes from eating a tomato or lettuce you planted, nurtured and harvested from your own garden patch. Advice abounds in your local library or online at gardening or nursery sites. Cooking in your own kitchen is a pleasure and it can even help you to maintain your waistline and boost your overall health. The reason is that in enjoying the colours of fresh produce and inhaling their fragrances, your brain receives signals that equate to the satisfaction of eating before you've taken even a bite. Also, the more you handle fresh food in its whole forms - for instance,an orange rather than a jar of marmalade - the more interest you'll take in learning about nutrition.

4. Sew some of your own clothes.

If you don't already own a sewing machine, then this is one time to break my 'don't buy anything new' rule. You will quickly become competent. I did it - and in a time before the brilliant modern versions - so the proverbial Drover's Dog could do it now. You can even teach yourself to draft paper patterns and save even more cash, especially on children's clothes.

5. Entertain friends and family at home.

The house you live in is the biggest investment you are ever likely to make and you've no doubt put a lot of effort, time and money into enhancing it. So why not consider it as what it really is: your own Day Spa, vacation Resort, intimate restaurant, cinema, Botanical gardens or whatever is fitting for the environment you have created or dream of making out of what already exists. Your teenagers may want a nightlife scene that's beyond your capacity to provide and probably beyond your capacity to endure if it could be inserted into your home. If so, what's wrong with letting the kids earn the cash to take them into these nightspots?

Here is an Extra Bonus Point.

If you've read any of the Tips above and thought 'Too Hard. I could never do that' then let me tell you a Secret. Success in all of these areas comes mainly from seat-of-the-pants experience, so don't let yourself be put off by the bucket loads of expert opinion. The experts all got there the same way you will: by trial and error.

The invention of the sewing machine is attributed to a London cabinet maker in 1790 but the first patent for a sewing machine was taken out by an American, Elias Lowe, in 1846. By 1850, another American, Isaac Merrit Singer, had completed his design for 'Singer's Perpendicular Action Sewing Machine' and patented it in August 1851. Technically, this was an industrial model, but by 1856 the advent of 'hire purchase' made the invention available to professional dressmakers. As always, this technological advance was to have an impact few people could foresee. Preventive Sewing-Machine Maintenance-Regular Sewing Machine Cleaning Is Essential

Regular cleaning is essential
Get in the habit of cleaning your machine after each project. Follow the instructions in your manual, or ask your machine mechanic to show you how. Basically, a routine cleaning can be accomplished quickly and easily if you follow these steps:


	Fold a piece of muslin in half, and use the folded edge to clean between tension disks.

Start at the top and clean the tension disks with a folded piece of fine muslin. Be sure the presser foot is up, so the tension springs are loose and the muslin can move easily between the disks, dislodging any lint or fuzz. Use a can of compressed air, blowing from back to front, to remove loose particles from around the tension disks and to clean other areas inside the machine. Don't blow into your machine yourself because breath contains moisture and will eventually cause corrosion.

Get into the habit of removing the machine's needle and throwing it away after completing a project. Then take out the throat plate, bobbin, bobbin case, and hook race if this applies to your machine (new computerized machines do not have removable hooks). Clean under the feed dogs and around the bobbin area with a small brush, and use the compressed air to blow out any lint from inside of the bobbin case. If the hook mechanism is removable, wipe it clean with a dot of oil on a piece of muslin, and give it an additional small drop of oil before returning it to the machine. Use a light oil recommended for sewing machines; do not use three-in-one oil. Check with your manual regarding any other areas on your machine that may require oiling, and use only a small drop for each spot. It is always better to oil too little more often than too much at one time, and avoid oiling any plastic parts.


Don't forget to clean inside the bobbin case. Using compressed air, which has a straw (shown in red above) to direct air to a desired spot, blow out lint and loose threads.		Use a soft piece of muslin with a dot of sewing machine oil to clean the race hook. If the hook is removable, place a drop of oil on it before returning it to the machine.

You can easily do this routine by yourself, but I also recommend a check-up by your dealer or an authorized mechanic every two years. Inexpensive Alternatives To The Brompton Easy Wheel Upgrade Explored & Accomplished

I finally completed the upgrade to change out those awful little stock Castor wheels on my own Brompton to something far better without going into too much money. I think I succeeded. I bought my Easy Wheel more inexpensive subsitute Razor A & A2 98mm Replacement wheels quite a while ago. I put away the brand new wheels while I recovered earlier this year. Now that I am ready to ride far more, I took my bike over to a new Brompton dealer nearby my residence with my pre-purchased scooter wheels last Wednesday. The mechanic had most of the inner parts except for a Bronee Sleeve to fit the bolt & wheel bearing. It had to be the same width as the wheel. As someone who's sold hundreds of Bromptons and many hundreds of other bicycles--let me say that Bs are tough little machines, and that there are some people who are able to break anything, then interpret any failure as the sign of a fatally bad design, shoddy materials or sinister negligence.

As in any machine, parts can break. Brompton are relatively unusual in that their machines can be fixed over and over. They also supply the parts to do this to 5, 10 and 15-year old machines, even as many bike and bike component makers seem to be determined to stamp out any hope of fixing last year's machines. These days, it's easier to fix many 20 year old bikes than two year old "high-tech" machines with now discontinued "new standard" parts.

Sure Brompton bottom brackets could be tougher--at increased pricing -- but somehow, most Brompton BBs see their 5th birthday--which is more than can be said for the BBs on many racing machines that cost far more. My 'ought-six S3-XL has been banged around Philadelphia, London, Las Vegas, New Jersey, NYC and etc... and I've gladly installed a new rear fender, a couple of tires, one chain, and one cable. I stuck a better BB in when I upgraded to a fancy-shmancy Sugino crank--but the old BB was still good. Not bad for a city commuter bike that is parked in a bike shop every day, but (full disclosure) never seems to make it into a repair stand.

We've recently been notified that Shimano is discontinuing making the (completely non-repairable) brake/shift controls for their 9-speed road bike gear systems... hundreds of thousands of bicycles use them.... their recommendation? "Get the new 10-speed system", i.e., toss your shifters, cogs, derailleurs, wheelsets in many cases, etc. BTW, the new 10-speed systems are made to need chain replacement in less than a season, and Shimano's now flogging an electronic shift system that will make make bike mechanic's lives even more hellish.
